A 36-year-old teacher in Ghana has been sentenced to 10 years in prison with hard labor for stealing more than GHS 238,550 from Bosomefreho Rural Bank Limited in the Ashanti Region.
The Bekwai Circuit Court handed down the sentence after the accused, John Ankomah Boateng, pleaded guilty to theft.
According to the prosecution, led by Detective Chief Inspector Eric Twum, the complainant, David Asare Atianeere, is the bank’s Internal Auditor.
The court heard that Boateng, a teacher at Freso SDA Junior High School and a customer of the bank, fraudulently withdrew the funds between 9 and 26 February 2024 using the GhanaPay mobile application—despite having a balance of only GHS 2.23 in his account.
The bank detected the irregular transactions and reported the case to the Ashanti South Regional CID on 28 February.
GNA reports that following investigations, Boateng was arrested on 13 March.
During interrogation, he admitted to the crime and revealed that he had transferred portions of the stolen money to various individuals.
This included GHS 10,000 to one Isaac, GHS 5,000 to Kwaku, GHS 20,000 to Duah, and GHS 5,000 to another individual known as Neymar.
He also confessed to sending GHS 40,000 to a travel agent for the processing of travel documents.
Boateng was subsequently charged with theft and brought before the Bekwai Circuit Court, where he pleaded guilty.
Presiding Judge Isaac Apietu sentenced him to 10 years in prison with hard labour.
