The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU of TUC, Ghana) and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC), collectively referred to as Road Transport Operators, have firmly dismissed reports suggesting a 20 percent upward adjustment in public transport fares, describing the announcement as unauthorized and misleading.
In a joint press release issued on Monday June 1, 2026, the two leading transport organisations stated that they have not engaged the Ministry of Transport or any relevant state institution on any proposal for an increase in fares.
They stressed that the purported announcement being circulated in the public space did not originate from their leadership and should therefore be treated as false.
According to the statement, any adjustment to public transport fares must follow a clearly defined and mutually agreed consultation process involving the Ministry of Transport, transport unions, and other relevant stakeholders.
The organisations emphasised that this process ensures transparency, fairness, and stability within the transport sector, and warned that any deviation from it undermines established procedures.
“The decision by the supposed group is illegal as it has not gone through the fare adjustment protocol and procedure agreed between the Ministry of Transport and the Road Transport Operators,” the statement said.
The GPRTU and GRTCC further expressed concern over the spread of the false announcement, noting that such misinformation has the potential to create confusion among commuters and transport operators, and could unnecessarily disrupt the transport system.
They therefore called on the general public, including commuters, drivers, vehicle owners, transport unions, loading point managers, and all stakeholders in the transport sector, to disregard the reported 20 percent fare increment and continue to operate with the currently approved transport fares.
The unions also cautioned operators nationwide against implementing any unapproved fare increases, stressing that no such directive has been sanctioned by the recognised leadership of the transport bodies.
They reaffirmed that any future review of transport fares will be communicated through official and authorised channels only, following full consultation with relevant authorities.
The leadership added that they are currently monitoring the next official pricing review window and will act in accordance with agreed procedures when necessary.
“We are monitoring the next pricing window and should there be the need for any fare adjustment, the public will be duly notified,” the statement reiterated.
