Ghana’s Minerals Commission has taken action against illegal and inactive mining operations, revoking 278 small-scale mining licences across the country.
In a notice released on October 23, 2025, the Commission explained that the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources authorised the move under the Minerals and Mining Act (Act 703) and L.I. 2173, citing both regulatory violations and expired permits.
The statement said that some operators violated regulatory requirements, while others were unable to continue mining because they did not renew their licenses.
In order to guarantee compliance in the small-scale mining industry and improve governance in the management of mineral rights, the decision was considered to be a component of this.
According to the statement, the government believes that these regulations are key to ensuring responsible and sustainable mining. It called on all small-scale operators to get acquainted with the laws guiding licence acquisition and renewal to avoid future sanctions.
