President John Mahama has, with immediate effect, removed Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo from office, acting on the binding recommendations of a constitutional committee established under Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution.
The decision follows the submission of a report by a committee constituted under Article 146(6) to investigate a petition filed by Ghanaian citizen Daniel Ofori. After an extensive review of testimonies and documentary evidence, the committee concluded that the Chief Justice had engaged in conduct amounting to stated misbehavior, as defined under Article 146(1).
In accordance with Article 146(9), the President was constitutionally obligated to act on the committee’s findings and recommendation for removal.
A statement issued by the Office of the President, and signed by Minister for Government Communications and Presidential Spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu, confirmed the dismissal. The statement emphasized that the decision takes effect immediately.
