A new survey by Pan-African civil society group Sanity Africa shows Kennedy Ohene Agyapong with a clear lead in the race for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential flagbearer position, drawing support from 52 percent of delegates.
The poll, conducted between December 2025 and January 2026 and released Monday, measured delegate preferences ahead of the primaries, breaking down results by gender, religion, age, and employment status.
Mr. Agyapong emerged as the frontrunner, followed by former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia with 40 percent. Dr. Bryan Acheampong received 7 percent, while Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum and Ing. Kwabena Agyapong registered less than 1 percent each.
The survey also highlighted sharp demographic divides. Among male delegates, Dr. Bawumia led with 48.9 percent compared to Mr. Agyapong’s 42.4 percent. Female delegates, however, strongly favored Mr. Agyapong, giving him 57.8 percent to Dr. Bawumia’s 37.1 percent.
Religion also played a role. A majority of Muslim respondents backed Dr. Bawumia, with 52.8 percent citing faith as an important factor, while 43.1 percent supported Mr. Agyapong. Christian delegates leaned heavily toward Mr. Agyapong, with 61.6 percent support. Dr. Adutwum, described as a church elder, ranked third among Christian voters.
Age differences were pronounced. Dr. Bawumia performed better among middle-aged and older delegates, leading Mr. Agyapong by three and nearly ten points respectively. Younger delegates under 40 gave Mr. Agyapong a commanding 63 percent, compared to Dr. Bawumia’s 33.5 percent.
Employment status further shaped preferences. Full-time workers favored Dr. Bawumia, 53.8 percent to 41.9 percent. Self-employed delegates, including traders, artisans, and farmers backed Mr. Agyapong at 55.5 percent. Students and unemployed delegates also leaned toward him, with 58.9 percent and 52.8 percent support respectively.
Sanity Africa said the findings suggest Mr. Agyapong holds a decisive edge heading into the primaries, buoyed by strong youth and female support as well as backing from self-employed and unemployed delegates.
