Ahead of the New Patriotic Party’s presidential primary on January 31, 2026, the party’s five presidential aspirants have signed a peace pact, pledging to ensure a transparent, credible and peaceful election process.
On Thursday, January 22, 2026, at Accra’s Alisa Hotel, NPP’s five presidential aspirants signed a peace pact committing to uphold the rules of the primary and maintain unity before, during, and after the election.
Former President Nana Akufo-Addo called on party members to put the NPP’s collective interest above personal ambition, stressing that the party’s future electoral success relies on cohesion.
Joseph Osei Owusu, Chairman of the NPP Elections Committee, urged aspirants to respect the January 31 primary results and back the winner, stressing that disputes should be settled within party structures to maintain unity.
Justin Frimpong Kodua, NPP General Secretary, hailed the signing of the peace pact as a testament to the party’s dedication to democracy and orderly competition.
“The agreement ensures all candidates fully engage in the process, accept the results of the January 31 primaries, and uphold party unity while supporting the winner in 2028,” he said. The aspirants acknowledged that the primaries were conducted fairly, inclusively, and transparently, and committed to avoid any conduct or statements that could disrupt party cohesion.
In addition, the aspirants committed to fostering harmony within the party before, during, and after the primaries, and to give their full support to the chosen flagbearer—not only for the 2028 general election but also in strengthening the NPP’s parliamentary majority. Any disputes arising from the pact are to be addressed through the party’s constitutional dispute resolution mechanisms.
The aspirants vying for the NPP presidential ticket include Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, former Vice-President and 2024 candidate; Kennedy Agyapong, former MP for Assin Central; Dr Bryan Acheampong, Abetifi MP and former Minister of Food and Agriculture; Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, Bosomtwe MP and former Minister of Education; and Ing. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, a former General Secretary of the party.
Ing. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong is seeking the NPP flagbearership for the third time, following bids in 2007 and 2023. Kennedy Agyapong is making his second attempt after finishing runner-up to Dr Mahamudu Bawumia in 2023. Dr Bryan Acheampong and Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum are first-time contenders, while Dr Bawumia aims for a second term.
The event was attended by senior party and state figures, including Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, NPP Council of Elders Chairman Hackman Owusu Agyemang, IGP Christian Tetteh Yohuno, former Chief Justice Akosua Frema Osei Opare, and other prominent officials.
