Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has been summoned to Parliament to provide an urgent update on the cholera and cerebrospinal meningitis outbreaks that have raised concerns across the country.
The hearing, set for within the next week, comes after a formal request from the Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, who called for immediate action to address the escalating health crisis.
Mr Afenyo-Markin, who represents Effutu, revealed that his constituency has seen more than 400 cholera cases, with three lives already claimed by the outbreak.
Meanwhile, the Upper West Region is grappling with 14 deaths attributed to meningitis.
In light of the alarming numbers, Afenyo-Markin called on the Health Minister to deploy additional resources, including medical staff, to overwhelmed health facilities, particularly in Winneba, where the local hospital is struggling to manage the influx of patients.
In response, First Deputy Speaker Bernard Ahiafor instructed the Health Minister to brief the House within one week, highlighting the urgency of addressing these outbreaks that are spreading across communities.
As the situation continues to unfold, calls for swift government intervention are growing louder, as many fear the potential for further loss of life.
