The Greater Accra Regional President of the Registered Nurses and Midwives Association, Jefferson Asare Danquah, has raised concerns over the growing exodus of specialised nurses from Ghana’s health sector.
Speaking at the maiden National Health Dialogue organised by the Tobinco Media Group, Mr. Danquah revealed that a significant proportion of trained professionals have left the country in search of better opportunities abroad.
“About 65% of emergency-trained nurses and 70% of critical care nurses in Ghana have left the country,” he stated.
He warned that the trend poses a serious threat to the country’s healthcare delivery system, particularly in specialised and emergency care.
Mr. Danquah also questioned the absence of a comprehensive national policy to guide healthcare infrastructure development, describing it as a major gap in the sector.
“A country that is 69 years old does not have a National Health Infrastructure Policy, so where are we going? What are we doing?” he asked.
The dialogue brought together key stakeholders in the health sector to deliberate on pressing challenges and explore solutions to strengthen Ghana’s healthcare system.
