Ghana’s Inspector-General of Police Christian Tetteh Yohuno has approved the promotion of more than 12,000 officers, clearing a decade-long backlog of delayed advancements, the police secretariat said Thursday.
The promotions, confirmed between January and early February, cover ranks from Lance Corporal to Chief Inspector and were carried out under the Police Service Regulations, 2012 (C.I. 76).
About 11,900 officers in lower ranks were elevated after serving beyond the required four-year period, while another 600 received promotions based on special recommendations, according to the secretariat.
The decision follows petitions from officers citing unfair treatment and delays, including those acquitted after long periods of interdiction. Families of officers killed in the line of duty also secured posthumous promotions for their relatives.
The secretariat rejected reports of nepotism, saying commanders across all 25 police regions submitted names of officers due for promotion and that the process followed due process
