Ghana’s opposition, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has criticised the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) for what it describes as unnecessary sensationalism and actions that risk causing national embarrassment.
The party’s National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye, took issue with the Special Prosecutor’s recent declaration that former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta is a fugitive, calling the claim inaccurate and premature.
“Mr. Ofori-Atta can never be a fugitive. He is not a fugitive, and he will never be a fugitive. The OSP got it wrong,” Mr Boakye stated during a press conference in Accra on Thursday, 13 February 2025.
He argued that the matter could have been handled through formal communication rather than public declarations that provoke unnecessary controversy.
“Until then, the Special Prosecutor should avoid making sensational statements provoking public emotions and creating drama over a matter that could have been adequately resolved through correspondence,” he added.
Mr. Boakye warned that such public statements, especially regarding a former finance minister, could damage Ghana’s reputation internationally.
“If you label your former finance minister a fugitive, which indeed he is not, it amounts to a national embarrassment when the length of your correspondence is just two weeks,” he said.
The OSP has yet to respond to the NPP’s concerns.
