Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kwesi Nyantakyi has been discharged by an Accra High Court, bringing an end to a five-year legal battle over corruption allegations.
The ruling, delivered by Justice Marie-Louise Simmonds, came after the prosecution failed to call a single witness throughout the trial.
Despite listing five potential witnesses, the state was unable to present testimony, with the final witness refusing to testify unless allowed to wear a mask—an unusual request that further complicated proceedings.
With no evidence presented, the court found no basis to continue the case. A key factor in the decision was a ruling by the Court of Appeal on January 30, 2025, which emphasised the right to a fair trial within a reasonable timeframe.
This ruling bolstered the High Court’s decision to discharge Mr Nyantakyi and his co-accused.
The case stemmed from an investigative exposé by journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas, which accused Nyantakyi of engaging in corrupt activities.
