The Adanse Adjiri Moomli-Brofo Ashiyie Royal Family has formally announced the selection of a new Paramount Chief for the historic Jamestown Ngleshie Alata Stool.
In a statement released by the royal family, Mr. Seth Nii Kofi Hammond – now known by his stool name, Nii Kofi Okpleng I – has been chosen to ascend to the chieftaincy. He is the son of the late Emma Naa Ameley Tagoe and hails from the Adanse Royal lineage.
The announcement was made during a press conference held at the royal family’s residence, where Mephibosheth Nana Agyeman Appiah, spokesperson for the newly selected chief, addressed the media. Speaking to Atinka TV, Mr. Appiah elaborated on the traditional processes that guide the selection of a chief in the Ga State.
“The chieftaincy alternates between two royal houses—Ajumako Dawurampong and the Adanse Royal Family. The late Paramount Chief, Oblempong Nii Kojo Ababio V, came from the Ajumako Dawurampong family. It is now the turn of the Adanse line to provide leadership,” – he explained.
He further noted that the selection process took several years due to the importance placed on consensus and suitability. “Choosing a chief is not rushed. It involves careful deliberation to ensure the right candidate is chosen, which is why today’s unveiling is significant,” Mr. Appiah said.
Nii Kofi Okpleng I was ceremoniously presented to the public dressed in traditional white regalia, a symbol of peace and authority. He expressed his deep appreciation for the honor and pledged to lead with integrity and dedication to the people of Jamestown and its coastal communities.
Key elders and members of the royal family were present to endorse the new chief, including Rt. Rev. Abraham Nii Aryee Tagoe, the most senior member of the clan, Mrs. Matilda Amarteifio Morgan, and Mr. Godfried Nii Armartey Laryea. The event was marked by traditional drumming, dancing, and joyful celebrations from community members who gathered in large numbers to witness the occasion.
The enstoolment of Nii Kofi Okpleng I marks a new chapter in the leadership of Jamestown Ngleshie Alata, reinforcing the rich cultural traditions of the Ga people.
