Newmont’s Development Foundation has commissioned a state-of-the-art sports facility in Adausena, a host community of its Akyem mine in Ghana’s Birim North Municipality.

The multipurpose sports complex, built for GHS 7.5 million, includes a basketball court, a lawn tennis court with four standard stands, two VIP stands, washrooms, and a gym.

The facility is expected to serve as a hub for talent development, youth empowerment, and community engagement.

“This project was one of the target areas for the board, as it will serve as a central point for talent development, youth empowerment, community development, and social cohesion. It represents the work of all our stakeholders, and we must be proud of the results,” said Paul Suchmann Apenu, Community Development Manager at Newmont’s Development Foundation in Akyem.

He added that the facility would support multiple sports disciplines, including table tennis and netball, in addition to basketball and lawn tennis.

The Chief of Adausena, Nana Boni Abankro V, praised Newmont for the initiative and urged stakeholders to ensure its proper maintenance.

The commissioning ceremony was attended by traditional leaders, board members of Newmont’s Foundation, representatives from the municipal sports directorate, and members of the local community.

Newmont has a long-standing commitment to promoting sports and recreation in its host communities.

Since 2006, the company has organised an annual inter-community sports competition and has built four football pitches in New Abirem, Old Abirem, Adausena, and Hweakwae to support youth development and inter-school sporting events.
