The Electoral Commission has declared NDC candidate Baba Jamal as the winner of the Ayawaso East parliamentary by-election.
His victory, announced Tuesday evening, was met with jubilation as supporters celebrated throughout the constituency.
In a by-election to replace the late MP Naser Toure Mahama, who passed away earlier this year, voters cast ballots on Tuesday, March 3.
Alhaji Mohammed Umaru Sanda and David Kanor, two independent candidates, were running with candidates from the NPP and LPG.
Baba Jamal was predicted to be in a dominant position, and the outcome eventually supported that prediction. Ramadan fasting was cited by observers as a potential reason for the slow turnout at the beginning of the election.
Police assured residents ahead of the polls that adequate security had been put in place, with officers deployed across all polling centres and key areas. Throughout the day, the Police Service reported a calm and orderly process, saying security personnel were prepared to handle any eventuality during counting and collation. The Inspector-General of Police was also seen visiting parts of the constituency as the polls came to an end.
