Military engineers from the Ghana Armed Forces have visited the Asuokow community in the Eastern Region to assess the hazardous conditions faced by schoolchildren who must cross a dangerous water body to reach school.
The visit follows a directive from President John Dramani Mahama after a viral video highlighted the risks the children face in their daily commute.
In a post on Facebook on Monday, February 10, Minister of Defence Dr. Edward Omane Boamah reassured the public that the government is committed to finding a permanent solution to the issue. “Engineers of the Ghana Armed Forces have already visited the Asuokow community, where young schoolchildren have to cross this water body to access school,” he wrote.
Dr. Omane Boamah emphasised that steps are being taken to ensure the safety of the children and the broader community. “As President John Dramani Mahama assured Ghanaians, we are working to urgently and permanently resolve the challenge the people and schoolchildren of Asuokow are facing,” he added. The visit by the military engineers marks the beginning of efforts to provide a safer route for the children and highlights the government’s commitment to improving education access and protecting vulnerable communities.
