A construction worker is currently fighting for his life after a building collapsed on him near the Kasoa New Market in the Awutu Senya East Municipality of the Central Region.
The incident occurred when an old residential structure caved in during reinforcement works. Three masons were reportedly working on erecting a pillar to support a summer hut attached to the building when the structure suddenly gave way. While two of the workers managed to escape unscathed, one was trapped under the rubble.
Emergency services, including personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), the Ghana Police Service, and the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), responded swiftly to the scene.
According to Nash Nyamdey, NADMO Director for Awutu Senya East, the rescue operation took approximately three hours before the trapped mason was pulled out alive. He sustained severe injuries, including a broken right leg, and was initially rushed to the Kasoa Mother and Child Hospital.
He was later transferred to the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra for specialized medical attention.
Mr. Nyamdey attributed the collapse to the use of substandard building materials. “This unfortunate incident could have been prevented if quality materials had been used. It’s a stark reminder of the dangers of cutting corners in construction,” he stated.
In an exclusive interview with Atinka News, the Municipal Chief Executive of Awutu Senya East, Hon. Seth Sabah Sewornoo-Banini, assured the public that a full investigation would be conducted.
The incident has sparked renewed calls for stricter enforcement of building codes and regular inspection of aging structures, particularly in rapidly growing urban areas like Kasoa.
