President John Dramani Mahama has pledged that recommendations from the ongoing National Education Forum will be fully utilised to drive significant reforms in Ghana’s education sector.

Speaking at the forum’s launch in Ho, Volta Region, on Tuesday, February 18, Mahama reaffirmed his government’s commitment to ensuring that insights from the discussions translate into real change.

“It must be our collective responsibility to make recommendations that are far-reaching, transformative, and necessary for developing the global Ghanaian,” Mr Mahama said.

“As a government, we are fully committed to this process. I want to assure you that your recommendations will not gather dust on the shelf.”

The forum is a key part of Mr Mahama’s campaign promise to engage the public in improving Ghana’s education system, with a particular focus on the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy.

To lead the initiative, Mahama appointed an eight-member committee on February 2, 2025. The team is chaired by former Pro Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast, Professor George K. T. Oduro, and includes respected educationists and policymakers such as Professor Goski Alabi, Professor Rosemary Bosu, Dr. Samuel Awuku, and Professor Smile Dzisi. Other members are Kofi Asare, Stephen Owusu, and Inusah Shiraz.

The committee has been tasked with developing a guiding theme, identifying key stakeholders, and crafting a structured agenda. It is also responsible for selecting a venue, setting up a secretariat, and preparing a budget for the forum.

With just two weeks to submit its report and strategic plan, the committee is expected to lay the foundation for critical policy decisions aimed at strengthening Ghana’s education system.
