The Government of Ghana has announced a GHC1 billion Bawku Revitalisation Fund aimed at driving post-conflict reconstruction and development in the Bawku area of the Upper East Region.
The initiative comes in the wake of the endorsement of the Bawku Conflict Mediation Report, presented by His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, who has played a central role in efforts to broker peace in the region.
In a statement signed by the Minister of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, the government said the fund would be disbursed over three years, from 2026 to 2028.

Officials confirmed that the money will be channelled into critical infrastructure and socio-economic recovery projects. These include the construction and rehabilitation of roads, healthcare and educational facilities, irrigation and dam projects to support year-round agriculture, security installations to safeguard peace, and new economic and commercial facilities to revive trade.
President John Dramani Mahama has directed that the fund be managed by a high-level committee chaired by Finance Minister Cassiel Ato Baah Forson. Membership will also include the Upper East Regional Minister, Donaltus Akamuguri, and the Majority Leader and Bawku Central MP, Mahama Ayariga.
The government stressed that the initiative is not only about rebuilding infrastructure but also about restoring Bawku’s historic role as a key economic and trading hub. “This fund is designed to foster peace, reconciliation, and sustainable development in the region,” the statement said.
The announcement marks one of the most significant commitments yet to stabilise Bawku, which has been scarred by years of violent conflict. By tying reconstruction directly to reconciliation, officials say the fund is intended to ensure that peace efforts translate into tangible improvements in the lives of residents.
