President John Dramani Mahama is set to deliver his much-anticipated State of the Nation Address (SONA) in the coming days, following the formation of his new Cabinet on Thursday, February 20.
In line with Article 67 of Ghana’s 1992 Constitution, the address will provide a comprehensive assessment of the nation’s economic situation and outline the government’s strategy for national development.
Felix Ofosu Kwakye, the Minister of State in charge of government communications, confirmed that President Mahama would address Parliament soon, but did not specify the exact date for the speech.
The Cabinet meeting, held before the announcement, covered several key issues, including national security, the economy, and the government’s ambitious 24-hour economy initiative.
Security ministers reassured the Cabinet that Ghana remains safe, despite emerging threats.
Key security figures, including the Defence Minister, Interior Minister, and National Security Coordinator, presented updates on the country’s readiness to tackle any potential risks, reaffirming the administration’s commitment to maintaining stability.
A key focus of the Cabinet discussions was the proposed 24-hour economy initiative, which aims to drive economic growth through continuous business operations. Goosie Tanoh, the Presidential Adviser on the initiative, reported that preparations for its full rollout were progressing well, with plans for an official roadmap to be shared with the public soon.
The Finance Minister, in his briefing, provided a candid assessment of the nation’s economic challenges, noting that the situation was more severe than anticipated during the election period.
