President John Mahama officially swore in the new members of Ghana’s Council of State at a ceremony held at Jubilee House in Accra on the evening of February 18.
However, the seats for the North East and Ashanti regions remain vacant due to a re-run of the elections in those areas on February 17.
Saaka Abuba of North East and Yaw Owusu Obimpeh of Ashanti will be appointed to the Council once the electoral process is concluded.
Their absence highlights the ongoing electoral procedure in those regions.
The Council of State, as mandated by Article 89(1) of Ghana’s 1992 Constitution, is responsible for advising the President on the execution of his duties.
The body is composed of both appointed and elected officials, including:
- A former Chief Justice
- A former Chief of Defence Staff
- A former Inspector General of Police
- The President of the National House of Chiefs
- One representative from each region of Ghana, elected through an electoral college
- Eleven additional members appointed directly by the President.
