Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, has rejected allegations that President John Mahama played any role in the discontinuation of high-profile criminal cases.
Dr. Ayine has faced mounting scrutiny over his office’s decision to drop several key cases, including those involving the Saglemi Housing Project, Bank of Ghana Governor Johnson Asiama, the Democracy Hub, and the prosecution of Stephen Opuni and Seidu Agongo in the COCOBOD matter.
Critics have suggested that Mr Mahama influenced these withdrawals, but Dr Ayine swiftly dismissed such accusations.
Speaking to the press on February 12, Dr Ayine was clear: he alone is responsible for all prosecutorial decisions and rejected any claims of political interference.
“As Attorney General, I take full responsibility for all the decisions so far taken. I am not under any instruction or pressure to discontinue any case or to bring charges against anyone,” Dr Ayine said.
He further refuted suggestions that Mahama acted as a “clearing agent,” emphasising the independence of his office.
“Those who are quick to tag President Mahama as a clearing agent should reconsider,” he asserted. “He is not responsible for prosecutions and has never directed me to drop any case.”
Dr Ayine underscored that his decisions have been based purely on legal merit, dismissing any notion of political influence.
