Private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has called for a younger generation of leaders to take charge of Ghana’s National Democratic Congress once President John Mahama leaves office.
In an interview on JoyPrime TV’s Prime Morning Show on Wednesday, Mr. Kpebu said he would like to see Finance Minister Ato Forson emerge as the party’s next flagbearer, with Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa as his running mate.
“If we are doing wishes, then undoubtedly, Ato Forson should go with Okudzeto. For the young persons, it is our turn generally to take over,” he said.
Mr. Kpebu argued that while senior figures in the party have played their role, it is time to allow younger politicians to step forward. “If old people have tried, it is okay, let the youth also come in, fresh ideas,” he added.
Mr. Mahama, who returned to the presidency a year ago, is serving his final term and is expected to retire from high office in 2028. The N.D.C. has yet to present a clear successor.
Mr. Kpebu believes that either Mr. Forson or Mr. Ablakwa would be the party’s strongest choice to lead in the 2028 general elections.

Martin Kpebu also described the late President Professor John Evans Atta Mills as the best president Ghana has produced under the Fourth Republic, particularly in terms of integrity and the fight against corruption. He also highlighted the former president’s honesty, stating that “Atta Mills never took our pesewa.”
Mr Kpebu explained that when a leader lives an upright life, it strengthens the fight against corruption and helps to drive the nation forward.
“When the life of the leader itself speaks volumes, it helps to drive the nation,” he said.
