Sports Minister Kofi Adams has pledged that those responsible for the death of Asante Kotoko supporter Francis Yaw Frimpong, known as Nana Pooley, will be held accountable under the law.
Pooley was fatally injured during a Ghana Premier League match between Asante Kotoko and Nsoatreman FC at Nana Konamansah Park in Nsoatre.
The incident, which has sparked widespread outrage, has led to the arrest of seven individuals, including Nsoatreman FC bankroller Ignatius Baffour-Awuah.
Mr. Adams, who visited the Kotoko camp on Friday to meet with club officials, including Kwesi Appiah and Nana Apinkra, emphasized that no one would be shielded from legal consequences, regardless of their position or status.
“We will not simply condemn this tragedy and move on. Those responsible will face punishment,” Adams said.
The minister stressed that violence has no place in Ghana’s sports scene. “Sports should be a unifying force, not a catalyst for such violence,” he added.
In the aftermath of the incident, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has imposed an indefinite ban on Nsoatreman FC’s home venue, Nana Konamansah Park.
Additionally, Asante Kotoko has suspended all senior team football activities until justice for Pooley is ensured.Mr. Baffour-Awuah, although granted bail, has been placed under a movement restriction order by the District Court in Sunyani.
