Energy Minister John Jinapor has refuted reports suggesting that the government plans to sell the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), calling the claims “entirely untrue.”

Speaking during a visit to the West African Gas Pipeline Company Station in Tema on February 21, Mr Jinapor clarified that while the government is exploring private-sector partnerships, it has no intention of privatising the state-owned power distributor.

“These reports are false,” Mr. Jinapor stated.

“ECG will not be sold, but we are looking at private sector participation to improve efficiency, reduce losses, and strengthen ECG’s financial sustainability.”

Mr. Jinapor explained that the government’s goal is to bring in private expertise to boost ECG efficiency, address operational losses, and ensure that citizens can afford their electricity bills.

The minister emphasized that the move aims to increase the company’s revenue base, ultimately helping to meet financial obligations and improve services.

“The focus is on creating a partnership that benefits the country not selling ECG,” he concluded.
