In a statement made on Thursday, February 13, 2025, Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga confirmed that the raid on the private residence of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, which took place on February 11, was led by Richard Jakpa, an official from the National Security Coordinator’s office.
The raid, which involved military and police personnel, has drawn significant attention due to its controversial nature.
Mr. Ayariga assured Parliament that President John Dramani Mahama is fully committed to protecting the rights and liberties of every citizen, and emphasised that such an incident would not be repeated.
“This occurrence is regrettable and unfortunate,” Ayariga said. “I have spoken with the relevant authorities, including the Minister of Interior and the Minister of Defence, who have assured me that such an event will not happen again.”
He further confirmed that the raid had been carried out by operatives from both the military and police, with Jakpa at the helm.
Mr Ayariga also stated that the National Security Coordinator’s office has assured the government that the raid was not intentional, stressing that the rights to privacy and property are fundamental and must be upheld.
The Majority Leader extended a personal apology to Ofori-Atta on behalf of the government, stating that the actions were deeply regrettable.
He reiterated that the government, under President Mahama’s leadership, remains dedicated to ensuring compliance with the law and the protection of individual rights.
Mr. Ayariga’s remarks came after heated discussions in Parliament following a request from the Deputy Minority Whip, who had raised concerns over the raid.
The incident is part of a wider series of developments surrounding the Special Prosecutor’s investigation into Ofori-Atta.
