The Israeli Ambassador to Ghana, Roey Gilad, has called on Ghana and the African Union (AU) to urge Hamas to lay down its arms and give peace a chance in the ongoing conflict between Israel and the militant group.

Speaking in an interview on Bullet TV’s Morning Target, Ambassador Gilad acknowledged Ghana’s right to express its views on international matters but expressed concern over what he described as “strong criticism” of Israel during the war.

“Ghana criticized Israel strongly — I don’t think it’s right, but they did, and it was for what happened during the war,” he said.

He also took issue with comments describing Israel’s military actions as genocide, calling such statements inaccurate.

“I think some of the statements that were made on genocide, for instance, were wrong statements,” the Ambassador stated.

Ambassador Gilad said Israel remains committed to peace but emphasized that progress can only be achieved if the international community, including Ghana, takes a firm stance against Hamas.

“We are facing a new chapter, and unless the international community — including Ghana and the African Union — calls on Hamas to put down their arms and give peace a chance, nothing will happen,” he noted.

He further underscored Ghana’s influential role in African and regional diplomacy, urging the country to use its position to advocate for peace.

“Ghana has a responsibility as a very important state in Africa and in ECOWAS to sound a clear voice and tell Hamas, ‘enough is enough.’ As long as those people are there, we’re facing a huge challenge,” he added.

The Ambassador’s comments come amid ongoing international debates about the Israel-Hamas conflict and Africa’s role in global peace advocacy.
