The Israeli Embassy in Ghana has marked Israel’s 77th Independence Anniversary with a vibrant celebration in Accra under the theme “Bridges of Hope.” The event brought together top diplomats, political leaders, government ministers, traditional authorities, and members of the clergy to reaffirm bilateral ties and call for global solidarity in the face of ongoing conflict in Gaza.

Delivering the keynote address, Israeli Ambassador to Ghana, Liberia and Sierra Leone, H.E. Roey Gilad, emphasized the longstanding relationship between Israel and Ghana, which dates back to 1956. He described the partnership as historic and resilient, despite current geopolitical challenges and economic setbacks in both countries.

“Israel is proud of our long-standing relations with Ghana. This began with the opening of our first African embassy here in Accra in 1957,” he noted.

While highlighting areas of collaboration including agriculture, cybersecurity, sports, and education, the Ambassador also turned attention to the ongoing war in Gaza. He revealed that over 1,200 people had died, and more than 50 hostages remain in captivity.

“578 days of pain and uncertainty—not only for the hostages but for all of us,” he said. “Hamas needs to release our hostages, lay down their weapons, and leave Gaza.”

Ambassador Gilad acknowledged the human cost of the conflict, paying tribute to two victims with ties to Ghana, and stressed that a peaceful solution remains possible between Israelis and Palestinians.

Ghana Reaffirms Its Commitment

Speaking on behalf of the Government of Ghana, Minister for Works and Housing, Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, praised the resilience of the Israeli state and reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to deepening cooperation.

“Ghana and Israel share a long-standing relationship rooted in friendship, mutual respect, and a shared mission for progress,” he said.

He highlighted successful collaborations in agribusiness, health, innovation, and technology, including the Ghana-Israel Agribusiness Innovation Center and training programs that continue to benefit young Ghanaians.

Mr. Adjei also cited Israel’s contributions to job creation and national development, and stressed the importance of diplomacy and peace in furthering mutual aspirations.

Bridging Cultures Through Performance

The event was also rich in culture and performance, featuring live jazz music from Israel and Israeli-Ghanaian collaborative acts. It served as a reflection of not only the strength of diplomatic ties but the shared hope for peace amid global unrest.

In closing, Ambassador Gilad expressed appreciation to Ghanaians and reaffirmed Israel’s support for Ghana’s democratic development.

“I would like to wish our hosts, the wonderful people of Ghana, to maintain their place as one of the most democratic and stable states in Africa,” he said.

The celebration was attended by me     mbers of the diplomatic corps, the Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, civil society groups, and Ghanaian-Israeli community members.
