IGP Gets Two-Year Tenure Extension from President Mahama

Under the renewed mandate, the IGP will maintain his present responsibilities and is tasked with progressing the significant reforms he has overseen in recent years.

In a move aimed at maintaining continuity within the security sector, President John Dramani Mahama has approved a two-year extension for IGP Christian Tetteh Yohunu.

Although Yohunu is due for retirement in December, the Police Council urged that his tenure be prolonged, pointing to his effective leadership and the need to sustain reform initiatives underway in the Police Service. The renewed term takes effect on December 28, 2025.

An official letter issued by the Secretary to the President, Dr. Callistus Mahama, and addressed to the IGP, explained that the decision to extend his tenure highlights government’s acknowledgement of his influential role in improving operational efficiency and ensuring stability across the Police Service.

“to sustaining ongoing reforms, strengthening operational effectiveness, and ensuring stability within the Ghana Police Service at this critical period.” The Police Council stressed that his stay in office is necessary.

Under the renewed mandate, the IGP will maintain his present responsibilities and is tasked with progressing the significant reforms he has overseen in recent years.
The correspondence further directed him to submit a formal acceptance of the re-engagement within three days of receipt.

The communication concluded with the Presidency conveying its assurances of highest consideration to the Inspector-General.
The extension has since attracted commentary within security and governance spheres, where it is widely viewed as a strategic measure to uphold continuity in Ghana’s internal security structure ahead of significant national milestones.

RE-ENGAGEMENT AS INSPECTOR-GENERAL OF POLICE

  1. I write to inform you that, following the recommendation of the Police Council and in accordance with the relevant provisions governing the administration of the Ghana Police Service, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, President of the Republic, has approved your re-engagement for an additional two (2) years upon the attainment of the statutory retirement age in December 2025.
  2. Your re-engagement takes effect from 28 December, 2025. During this period, you shall continue to serve as the Inspector-General of Police and discharge the duties and responsibilities attached to the office.
  3. The President’s decision reflects the Council’s firm conviction that your continued leadership is essential to sustaining ongoing reforms, strengthening operational effectiveness, and ensuring stability within the Ghana Police Service at this critical period.
  4. You are kindly requested to indicate your acceptance of this re-engagement in writing within three days upon receipt of this letter.
  5. Please accept, Mr. Inspector-General, the assurances of the highest consideration of His Excellency the President.
