The International Democracy Union (IDU) has congratulated former Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia on his election as the 2028 presidential flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
In a letter dated February 16, 2026, the Chairman of the IDU and former Canadian Prime Minister, Stephen Harper, conveyed the organisation’s warm congratulations to Dr. Bawumia following his endorsement by party delegates.
According to the letter, Dr. Bawumia’s selection reflects the confidence party members and supporters have in his leadership, experience and vision for Ghana’s future. The IDU noted that leading the NPP into another national election is both an honour and a significant responsibility.
The global alliance of centre-right political parties also commended Dr. Bawumia for his continued commitment to democratic principles, individual freedom and the rule of law. It highlighted the long-standing relationship between the IDU and its member parties across the world, including the NPP.
As Ghana prepares for the 2028 general election, Mr. Harper wished Dr. Bawumia wisdom, strength and success in the campaign ahead. He further expressed hope that the polls would be conducted in an atmosphere of civil political discourse, respect for democratic norms and active participation by the Ghanaian electorate.
Dr. Bawumia was recently elected to lead the NPP into the 2028 presidential race, positioning him as the party’s candidate in what is widely expected to be a closely contested election.
