I See and Sense Victory in 2028- Afenyo-Markin

The NPP’s 2024 electoral defeat reflected economic hardship, weak campaign strategy, and internal divisions. Analysts noted inflation, debt, and unemployment eroded voter confidence. Post-defeat, attention shifted to the January 31, 2026 flagbearership race, where Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Kennedy Agyapong, and Bryan Acheampong emerged as key contenders.

The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) remains confident of reclaiming power in the 2028 general election. Minority leader in parliamentary, Alexander Afenyo-Markin said in a Christmas message on  Wednesday December 25th, marking one year since President John Dramani Mahama returned to office.

Afenyo-Markin told supporters that the party views the remaining three years of Mahama’s term as an opportunity to rebuild and regain public trust.

“I sense victory ahead in 2028,” he said in a Christmas message on Facebook to party members.

Call for Unity

His remarks come as the NPP prepares to elect a new flagbearer on Jan. 31, 2026, a contest that has intensified internal competition following the party’s defeat in the 2024 elections. Afenyo-Markin urged members to avoid actions that could fracture the party, warning that divisions could weaken its prospects in the next polls.

“As we prepare for our upcoming flagbearer election, let us treat one another and our traditions as sacred,” he said. “Our credibility and moral authority must be preserved if we are to reclaim power in 2028.”

Party leaders have emphasized that a disciplined and transparent election process will be critical to presenting a united front to Ghanaians. The Efutu constituency MP expressed optimism that the NPP can recover from its 2024 loss, noting that Mahama’s first year in office provides the opposition with space to strengthen its base across the country.

“With discipline, respect, and a shared vision, we can turn the challenges of today into the victories of tomorrow,” he said.
