The Ministry of the Interior has set a six-week ultimatum for anyone holding unregistered firearms, insisting they hand them over voluntarily or face tough consequences.
Running from December 1, 2025, to January 15, 2026, the nationwide exercise is designed to halt the proliferation of illicit arms and respond to the rise in gun-related offences.
During the official launch of the Gun Amnesty Initiative, Minister for the Interior Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak cautioned that individuals in possession of unauthorized firearms after the stipulated deadline will face stringent legal consequences. He underscored the initiative’s importance in strengthening national security.
“When the amnesty starts from first December, the six weeks, we’re not going to be licensing any new person who wants to come on board because we want to be able to take stock of those that we already know have licenced to be dealer”. Hon. Muntaka mentioned.
“If you don’t register, we don’t know of you and your manufacturing, whatever it is, whether it’s a shotgun or whatever, that’s an illegal activity. That’s an illicit gun that you are manufacturing and obviously we have to have to deal with you”. He added.
The ministry emphasized that individuals who turn in their unregistered or illegally held weapons during this window will not face legal action.
He further announced a temporary restriction on firearm usage during traditional festivities throughout the amnesty period, a measure aimed at minimizing celebratory gunfire and safeguarding lives.
