Gumah FM’s management has announced plans to formally petition the National Media Commission (NMC) following the station’s recent shutdown by the Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations.
On February 19, 2025, the ministry ordered the closure of several media outlets, including Gumah FM, for operating without valid frequency authorization. The shutdown was also linked to allegations that the station’s broadcasts had incited violence in Bawku, a town experiencing ongoing conflict.
Speaking with Citi News on February 20, Nurudeen Gumah, the station’s General Manager, confirmed the station would first seek clarification from the National Communications Authority (NCA) regarding the reasons for the closure. Should the response be unsatisfactory, the station’s management plans to escalate the issue to the courts.
“We will write to the NCA to request an explanation for the shutdown, and we will petition the NMC for further review of the matter. If we don’t get a satisfactory response, we will have no choice but to take the matter to court,” Gumah said.
The station’s management has characterized the shutdown as politically motivated, demanding that the ministry provide concrete evidence of any wrongdoing.
“The ministry issued a letter closing us down without presenting any clear evidence. If they have identified specific content inciting violence, they should present it,” Gumah stated. “We believe this is either a politically motivated attack or an effort to silence Gumah FM.”
