The group has also threatened to petition the European Union Representative in Ghana, the International Monetary Fund, and the World Bank if its concerns are not addressed.

A civil society group has called on President John Dramani Mahama to revoke the appointment of Dr. Johnson Asiama as Acting Governor of the Bank of Ghana, citing concerns over transparency and accountability.

The Centre for Democratic Movement argues that Dr. Asiama’s past legal troubles linked to Ghana’s financial sector crisis make his appointment controversial.

Dr. Asiama was among nine individuals charged in connection with the collapse of UniBank and UT Bank.

The charges, which included fraudulent breach of trust, money laundering, and conspiracy, were later withdrawn.

However, the group insists that his appointment raises ethical concerns.

“The decision undermines efforts to restore confidence in Ghana’s financial institutions. Appointments must be based on merit, not political considerations,” the group said in a statement.

The Centre for Democratic Movement warned that if the appointment is not revoked, it could affect investor confidence and Ghana’s reputation for ethical governance.
