President John Mahama has cautioned that government appointments are not just about recognition but come with significant responsibilities and public accountability.
Speaking to the Ghanaian community in Ethiopia on Monday, 17 February 2025, Mr Mahama acknowledged the growing interest in who has received the “green letter”—a reference to official government appointment notices.
However, he stressed that such positions demand results and accountability.
“Those of us in leadership must lead by example. We must be prepared to be held accountable for the public trust. If you accept to serve in the public sector, then you must be ready to answer to the people—because it is the people who put you there,” he said.
He emphasised that while his administration would scrutinise the actions of past governments, it must also be prepared for similar scrutiny.
“The green letter comes with a lot of responsibility and expectation. As we hold those before us accountable, we must remember that we, too, will be held to account,” he noted.
He acknowledged that while some reforms may take time, laying a strong foundation for Ghana’s future was essential.
“We may not complete the process, but I am determined to lay the foundation and put Ghana on the right track,” he said.
