While the Minister acknowledged the need for a price reduction, he made it clear that business professionals and entrepreneurs who require premium services will not be part of the fee reduction, given their ability to pay the current rates.

Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has vowed to take action to reduce the current GH₵500 passport fee, calling it too expensive for the average Ghanaian.

During a visit to the Passport Office in Accra on February 19, Ablakwa addressed growing concerns over the affordability of passport applications, stating that many Ghanaians have voiced frustration over the high cost.

“People are complaining that passport application fees are too expensive for ordinary Ghanaians. During our national tour, many citizens expressed the need for a change,” he said.

Mr.Ablakwa confirmed that the government would seek parliamentary approval to amend the current fee structure, with an emphasis on making passports more accessible, particularly for disadvantaged groups.

“We want to ensure that people, especially underprivileged individuals, can afford passports.

Our plan is to go back to Parliament and revise the fees. For brilliant students on scholarships, we’ll ensure they have the opportunity to acquire passports for free,” he added.
