A transportation expert, Dr. Godfred Akyea-Darkwah, has attributed the collapse of Ghana’s public transport system to political interference and the abandonment of projects by successive governments.
Speaking on Morning Target on Bullet TV, Dr Akyea-Darkwah said interventions introduced since the 1970s have consistently failed because they have not been sustained beyond the regimes that initiated them.
“It’s not necessarily about a change in government, but the lack of continuity in transport policy,” he lamented.
Dr. Akyea-Darkwah further argued that the administration of public transport should be taken out of government hands and entrusted to private operators.
“If government delegates public transportation administration to private enterprises, they will perform far better,” he noted.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Concern Drivers Association has accused some officers of the MTTD of the Ghana Police Service of aiding drivers who charge unapproved fares.
Reacting to allegations that drivers extort money from passengers during peak hours, the Association’s Public Relations Officer, David Agboado, claimed certain MTTD officers stationed at bus stops are complicit in the practice.
