The Ghana Armed Forces has confirmed that a Ghanaian battalion headquarters serving with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) in southern Lebanon has come under missile attack amid escalating hostilities in the region.
According to a press release issued by the Department of Public Relations at General Headquarters in Burma Camp, Accra, the incident occurred between 1745- and 1752-hours local time following ongoing exchanges between the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and the Hezbollah.
The Ghanaian battalion headquarters was struck by two missiles during the attack.
Soldiers Injured
The military said two Ghanaian soldiers sustained critical injuries while another was left traumatised by the incident. The Officers’ Mess facility at the base was also hit and completely destroyed by fire.
The injured soldiers are currently receiving treatment at the Level One Medical Bunker within the UN mission area and are reported to be stable. Arrangements are underway to evacuate them to the UNIFIL Headquarters Referral Hospital for further medical care.
Despite the attack, the Ghana Armed Forces said all troops remain safe, having taken cover in underground bunkers.
Government Protests Incident
Meanwhile, the Government of Ghana, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has formally protested the incident at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
The government urged parties involved in the conflict in southern Lebanon to respect their responsibilities under international law and ensure the safety of peacekeepers deployed in the theatre.
Call for Calm
The Ghana Armed Forces assured the public that the situation is being closely monitored and urged citizens to remain calm amid the fragile security environment.
