President John Dramani Mahama has called on Ghanaians to unite, uphold discipline and work together to rebuild the nation as the country marked its 69th Independence Day.

Delivering his address at the Jubilee House during the national celebration, President Mahama said Ghana’s independence would remain meaningful only if citizens worked collectively to build a prosperous and responsible nation.

The President paid tribute to Ghana’s founding leaders, especially Kwame Nkrumah, and other past heads of state for their contributions to the country’s democratic development. He noted that Ghana’s democracy has endured because citizens have learned to “compete without destroying and disagree without hatred.”

President Mahama said his government is focused on resetting the nation’s economy and restoring confidence.

According to him, inflation is gradually declining, the Ghana cedi is stabilising, and efforts are underway to strengthen fiscal discipline and renegotiate national debts to ease the burden on citizens.

He also stressed the need to fight corruption, describing it as a “cancer” that weakens national development. The President said his administration is strengthening institutions and ensuring that no one is above the law.

Among major policy announcements, the President revealed that he has assented to the 24-Hour Economy Authority Bill, which aims to increase productivity by encouraging businesses and factories to operate around the clock, creating new jobs across several sectors.

He further announced plans to establish a Women’s Development Bank to support women entrepreneurs with financing, mentorship and business opportunities.

Addressing the youth, President Mahama urged them to take advantage of digital technology, education and innovation to prepare for the future.

The President also highlighted Ghana’s commitment to African unity and the African Continental Free Trade Area, whose secretariat is based in Accra, noting that the initiative will promote economic integration across the continent.

As Ghana approaches its 70th independence anniversary next year, President Mahama called on citizens to place national interest above political or ethnic divisions.

“Ghana is bigger than any one of us,” he said, urging citizens to work with dedication to build prosperity and hope for future generations.
