Ghana U-20 head coach Desmond Ofei believes his side have been handed a favourable draw for the 2025 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after avoiding some of the continent’s heavyweights.
The Black Satellites have been placed in Group A alongside hosts Côte d’Ivoire, Tanzania, DR Congo, and a yet-to-be-confirmed team from the UNIFFAC zone.
Ofei admitted that Ghana was fortunate to steer clear of Group B, which features former champions Egypt, Morocco, and Nigeria.
“We’re happy not to be in Group B because that’s a very interesting group,” Ofei told local media.
“I feel like we’re in a position where we can control the narrative of this tournament from our perspective.”
“The only downside is that we’re in a group of five, meaning we’ll have to play one extra game compared to the other groups. But overall, I think we’re in a good position to manage the situation well,” told Joy News Prime.
The tournament kicks off on 26 April and runs until 18 May, with 13 teams competing. The four semi-finalists will secure a place at the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile later this year.
