Today, August 11, 2025, the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) laid a wreath in remembrance of the eight Ghanaians who perished in the helicopter crash during a government anti-galamsey mission last week.

The nation’s continuous remembrances of the victims included the poignant ceremony, which emphasized the respect and appreciation for their service to Ghana.

All those on board were killed when an Air Force Harbin Z-9 helicopter crashed on a wooded slope in the Ashanti Region’s Adansi-Akrofuom district on August 6. Among the victims were;

Dr Edward Omane Boamah, Minister of Defence, Dr Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, Minister of Environment, Alhaji Muniru Mohammed Limuna, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator, Dr Samuel Sarpong, NDC National Vice Chairman, and Samuel Aboagye, former parliamentary candidate and three Ghana Armed Forces crew members

From August 7 to 9, President John Dramani Mahama proclaimed three days of national mourning, during which time official activities would be suspended, and flags would be flown at half-mast. On August 15, Black Star Square will host a state funeral for the victims.

Institutions nationwide have organized some tributes, including the GOC’s wreath-laying. Pallbearers from the Ghana Armed Forces carried flag-draped caskets in a solemn procession led by Chief of Staff Julius Debrah at a military reception earlier this week.

The cause of the crash is being investigated by a board of inquiry. The voice recorder in the cockpit and the flight data recorder have both been recovered for examination.
