Ghana has been confirmed as the host nation for the 2026 Africa Aquatics Swimming Championships, scheduled to take place from May 5 to May 10, 2026, at the Borteyman Sports Complex in Accra.
The announcement was made by the Bureau of Africa Aquatics, which cited Ghana’s consistent support for aquatic sports and its recent track record in organizing regional and continental competitions. The event will introduce a new format, combining four categories: Seniors, Juniors, Masters, and Inter-Zonal Championships.
Ghana has previously staged several major aquatic events, including the Africa Aquatics Junior & Senior Swimming and Open Water Championships in 2021, the Zone II Junior Championships in 2023, and the Zone II Junior & Senior Championships in 2025. These experiences were highlighted as evidence of the country’s readiness to host a larger, more complex continental competition.
The Borteyman Sports Complex, built to international standards, will serve as the venue. The facility includes an Olympic-standard swimming pool and modern amenities designed to accommodate athletes, officials, and spectators.
The Africa Aquatics Swimming Championships are regarded as the premier continental competition for the sport, bringing together elite swimmers from across Africa. The inclusion of Juniors and Masters alongside Seniors reflects a broader effort to expand participation and showcase talent across age groups.
Organizers may face logistical and financial considerations, including sponsorship, athlete preparation, and coordination of multiple categories within a six-day schedule. Ghanaian athletes are expected to intensify training to maximize the advantage of competing on home soil.
