The Government of Ghana has intensified efforts to seek justice for the late Nana Agyei Ahyia, a Ghanaian student who died under unusual circumstances while studying in Latvia, following the deployment of a high-level delegation to engage Latvian authorities.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the delegation was led by the Honourable Foreign Minister and held extensive meetings with senior Latvian officials, including the Foreign Minister, Interior Minister, police leadership, state prosecutors, and investigators handling the case.

The delegation included forensic experts, a pathologist, lawyers, Ghana’s Ambassador, and consular officers from the Ghanaian Embassy in Berlin. The family of the deceased—represented by Nana Agyei Ahyia’s mother and aunt—also participated in the engagements.

According to the Ministry, Latvian authorities assured Ghana that investigations into the student’s death remain active and ongoing. In response to the strong interest expressed by the Government of Ghana, Latvian officials disclosed that the case is now under the direct supervision of the Interior Ministry, with fresh investigators appointed to ensure credible and transparent outcomes.

As part of the investigative process, Nana Agyei Ahyia’s mother, guided by the Ghanaian delegation, submitted a formal statement to the appropriate Latvian authorities. Ghana also indicated that further submissions may be made to support the investigation.

The Government of Ghana has further demanded that the final investigative report be made available to the family of the deceased, a request to which the Latvian authorities raised no objection.

Reaffirming its commitment to accountability, the Ministry stated that Ghana will maintain regular diplomatic engagement with Latvian authorities and continue to use all appropriate legal and diplomatic avenues to ensure that due process is followed and justice is served.

The Ministry also confirmed that officials remain in close contact with the bereaved family and will continue to provide regular updates to both the family and the public. The public has been urged to refrain from speculation and conjecture that could undermine ongoing investigations.

“The Government of Ghana remains absolutely committed to safeguarding the welfare and rights of all Ghanaians at home and abroad,” the statement concluded.
