The Ghana Education Service (GES) has held a high-level crisis meeting to address recent incidents of violence recorded during ongoing inter-school sports competitions in parts of the Central Region.

The emergency meeting, held on Monday, February 23, 2026, was chaired by the Director-General of GES, Ernest Kofi Davis, together with his management team, following reports of assaults and disorder at some district sporting events.

Broad Stakeholder Participation

The Central Regional delegation was led by the Regional Director of Education, Juliette Dufie Otami, and included municipal and district directors of education, heads of affected schools, sports coordinators, zonal executives, some affected students, and their parents.

Also in attendance was the Technical Advisor to the Minister for Education, George K. T. Oduro.

Participating schools included Aggrey Memorial Senior High School, Adisadel College, Swedru School of Business, Obrachire Senior High Technical School, and Kwanyako Senior High Technical School.

GES Condemns Violence, Suspends Sports

During the meeting, regional education officials gave detailed eyewitness accounts of the incidents, highlighting causes, immediate responses, and recommendations to improve safety at future sporting events.

Prof. Davis strongly condemned the acts of violence, describing the behaviour displayed by some students as unacceptable and contrary to the principles of discipline, sportsmanship, and mutual respect.

He stressed that school sports are meant to nurture talent, promote unity, and open pathways for students to build professional careers, especially as football and traditional games increasingly offer economic opportunities.

In line with these concerns, the Director-General endorsed the suspension of all inter-school sporting activities in the Central Region pending the completion of investigations.

No Fatalities Confirmed

GES management clarified that no deaths were recorded, dismissing reports circulating in sections of the media. The student earlier rumoured to have died was present at the meeting. All injured students have since been discharged from hospital and are responding positively to medical care.

Authorities also confirmed that the alleged perpetrators have been arrested and are currently assisting the Ghana Police Service with ongoing investigations.

Firm Warning Issued

Concluding the meeting, Prof. Davis stated that any student found culpable of assault or violence would face appropriate sanctions in line with Ghanaian law and GES regulations.

GES reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring safety, discipline, and the integrity of school sporting activities nationwide.
