A senior psycho-oncologist, Abdul-Rahim Salisu Angu, has warned that drug addiction can be influenced by both genetic predisposition and environmental factors.
Speaking on Bullet TV’s Morning Target on Thursday, 20 February 2025, he explained that some individuals have underlying psychological conditions in their genetic makeup, making them more vulnerable to substance abuse.
“The drugs wake up the underlying sleeping dog,” he told Seli Acolatse Apaloo who co-hosts the show with Nana Kweku Aduah, referring to how addiction can be triggered in those with a predisposition.
However, he noted that even individuals without genetic risk factors can become heavy drug users.
Mr Angu outlined several warning signs of drug abuse, including slurred speech, physical changes, poor hygiene, and behavioural shifts.
The presence of needles and certain sweet-scented drugs could also raise suspicions.
He emphasised the role of parents in early detection but noted that many fail to notice these signs due to their busy schedules and limited interaction with their children.
He also highlighted the serious consequences of addiction, warning that drug-dependent individuals are at a high risk of engaging in criminal activity to sustain their habit.
“The addiction pushes the desire very high, so they do everything to get money to buy the drug,” he said.
Beyond behavioural changes, he warned that addiction severely affects mental health.
“Drug addicts hallucinate. They see and hear things that don’t exist. They become paranoid. It affects their insight and judgment,” he added.
The discussion underscores the growing concerns over drug abuse and the need for early intervention, awareness, and parental involvement in tackling addiction.
