Eyewitnesses say four armed men on two motorbikes stormed the NHIA premises around 10 a.m. and opened fire indiscriminately. Two of the attackers were reportedly dressed in smocks and helmets, while the other two wore face masks to conceal their identity. Two people — a staff member inside the NHIA office and another man outside — were shot dead instantly.
The gunmen reportedly extended their attack beyond the NHIA office, targeting bystanders, teachers, and pupils from a nearby public school. The headteacher of the Garu G/A Primary School and a local chief were among those killed. The attackers are said to have seized a motorbike from one of their victims before fleeing through the town toward the Kugri/Songo road.
Security has since been reinforced in Garu, with heavily armed police and military personnel patrolling key areas, including the NHIA office and the Garu Presbyterian Hospital. Hospital authorities confirmed four deaths, while several others are receiving treatment for gunshot wounds. Residents, still in shock, are calling for calm and urging security agencies to investigate the motive behind the attack and bring the perpetrators to justice.
The MP for the constituency, Dr. Thomas Anabah described the incidence as “unacceptable”.
Speaking in an interview with Bullet News, he said the incident had left most members in the community in “shock”. He confirmed security deployment in the community; military have teamed with the place to identify the perpetrators involved in the shooting.
