A criminal organization connected to a string of armed robberies that targeted rural banks in five (5) different districts has been disbanded by the Ghana Police Service. 14 weapons, including AK-47 rifles taken from dead police officers, have been found, and 10 (10) suspects have been taken into custody.
During a press conference held on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, at the National Police Headquarters, Inspector-General of Police Dr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno confirmed the arrests.
He disclosed that police had to locate hideouts across the Ahafo, Western, Central, Eastern, and Ashanti areas during the six-month operation, which ran from April to September and was built on intelligence collection and surveillance.
The group’s crime spree stretched from April 10, beginning at the Adansi Rural Bank in Fomena, to September 14, when they hit the St. Martin de Porres Cooperative Credit Union in Atonsu Monaco. In total, investigators link them to eleven high-profile robberies. Striking in the quiet hours before dawn, the gang routinely subdued security guards, confiscated their weapons, and breached vaults using industrial cutters.
The gang boss Kwasi Egyir, also known as Cobra, was apprehended at his hideout in Esereso Adagya on September 18, marking a significant development. A pair of AK-47 firearms were recovered from a pond. Cobra later identified 14 accomplices, which resulted in additional arrests around the Ashanti Region.
Three AK-47 rifles, seven pump-action weapons, four handguns, six cars, four motorcycles, GH¢18,845 in cash, international currencies, cell phones, and jewelry were among the finds. Authorities also connected the group to Corporal Francis Adu Yaw’s murder on the Bibiani-Goaso highway in 2024.
Two suspects are still at large, while three (3) were slain in run-ins with the law. A manhunt is underway for the fugitives, Kwabena Owusu-Ansah, popularly known as Kobi, and another man named Nana Albert.
In the battle against violent crime, especially the recent wave of robberies against rural banking institutions, the Police Service has hailed the syndicate’s dissolution as a significant victory. The entire extent of the gang’s operations is being investigated.
