Businessman Gabriel Atokple Kwamigah Tanko has been elected as the Volta Region’s representative on Ghana’s Council of State, securing 24 out of 36 votes in the election held on February 11, 2025, at the OLA Senior High School Assembly Hall.
Mr Tanko, who was one of 13 candidates in the race, won decisively after the voting began at 9:50 AM, following some initial tensions.
His victory positions him as a key figure in the Council of State, a constitutional advisory body to the President.
In his remarks following the win, Mr Tanko committed to harnessing the economic potential of the Volta Region for future development, vowing to advocate for policies that would benefit the region.
The election was not without controversy, as some candidates alleged that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) had unduly influenced the voting process by swaying delegates’ decisions.
Despite these claims, the election proceeded smoothly, with Tanko securing a commanding victory.
