Yaw Owusu Obimpeh, the former chairman of the Ashanti Region’s National Democratic Congress (NDC), has been elected as the region’s representative to the Council of State.
Obimpeh won the election with 49 votes, defeating Nana Nkansah Boadu Ayeboafo, who secured 35 votes. Daniel Anarfi Yamoah trailed in third place with a single vote, while one delegate was absent.
The election, which was initially marred by disruptions last week, saw enhanced security measures during the rerun.
In anticipation of further disturbances, police implemented stringent protocols, including barricades at key exits and road closures around the Prempeh Assembly Hall, which served as the venue. Only accredited individuals, including two supporters per candidate, were permitted access, with each person photographed before entry.
The rerun occurred under tight surveillance, with local authorities ensuring the proper implementation of election procedures. Frederick Agyei, another candidate, confirmed that the police adhered to the required protocols.
By midday, fewer than 30 of the 86 delegates had cast their votes, while some delegates were transported to the venue, with NDC Chairman Nana Akwasi Augustus Andrews leading the group.
The election, which involved an earlier withdrawal by one of the candidates, concluded without significant incident despite some dissatisfaction voiced by certain participants, including Nana Akuoko.
