Gifty Oware-Mensah, a former Deputy Executive Director of the National Service Authority (NSA), has returned to Ghana and is willing to assist with National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) investigations into claims that the authority’s payroll contains at least 80,000 ghost names, according to Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin.
Mrs. Oware-Mensah arrived in Ghana on Tuesday, March 4, 2025, and would be happy to appear before the NIB with her attorneys, according to the Effutu MP and attorney.
“I am aware that Gifty arrived this afternoon. I have been in touch with her; she’s here in Ghana. Her lawyers are in contact with the National Investigation Bureau, and I am sure she is going to make herself available. Whatever the state investigation authorities have, they would proceed within due process”. He noted.
The lawmaker emphasised that while he and the main opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) supported due process, they were not anti-accountability.
“My view is that the NPP is not against accountability, me inclusive. We have been in public service, we are out of it, so obviously if the new government needs former officials to explain certain matters in one way or the other, it is in their right to do so,” he said.
Dispelling rumours, NPP Deputy General Secretary Haruna Mohammed told Joy News that Gifty Oware-Mensah did not flee Ghana to avoid accountability, clarifying that she was on official business abroad.
“I would like to state the fact that the allegation of fraud remains an allegation. This is an established fact that has been publicly said at the National Service Authority. This is an allegation which has not been proven”, he added.
President John Dramani Mahama requested that security agencies place people suspected of corruption offences on a wanted list during his State of the Nation Address (SONA) on February 27.
Former NSA Deputy Director of Operations Kwaku Ohene Gyan, also known as Osonoba, had previously been arrested and interrogated by the NIB.
