In an effort to reinstate sanctions on Iran for its nuclear program, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom have activated the UN’s so-called “The United Nations’ “snapback” mechanism was activated by France, Germany, and the United Kingdom with the intention of reimposing sanctions on Iran due to its nuclear program.
The action comes after a recent 12-day war with Israel in which Iran’s atomic facilities were repeatedly hit. The action was harshly denounced as illegitimate by Moscow.
“So now the world is at crossroads. It’s quite clear. One option is peace, diplomacy, goodwill. Normal human contact. Another option is kind of diplomacy at the barrel of the gun… The second option is clearly represented by the action that was triggered today by France, UK and Germany… This move by European countries in our view has absolutely no legal bearing because they were not implementing resolution 2231 in good faith.” First deputy permanent representative of Russia to the UN, Dmitry Polyanskiy stated.
Designed to be veto-proof, the snapback process was established in the 2015 nuclear agreement and is anticipated to go into force. It would impose additional strain on Iran’s already fragile economy by limiting the development of ballistic missiles, freezing Iranian assets, and prohibiting the sale of weapons.
In an apparent clash with Europe, Russia, which assumes the president of the U.N. Security Council in October, has put out a competing plan to prolong the validity of the resolution that serves as the foundation for the snapback mechanism.
